Photo-illustration: Renee Comet

Recognized as a top food and still-life photographer who does unsurpassed “beauty shots” for large national clients—especially cookbooks, editorial and advertising—Renee relishes opportunies to experiment with new techniques and subject matter.

For this picture of winter greens shot for a Restaurants USA feature, Renee utilized a very unusual technique, capturing the colorful subject matter with an abstract feel of winter, a refracted view through a frosty pane. I was in the studio for the shoot, observing the very odd camera/subject arrangement, but even looking through the viewfinder, I could not tell how the image would appear until I saw the Polaroids. Without giving away her very cool trade secret, I will say this: it was all done with mirrors!
